ESCC Hall of Fame inducts 12 on April 12

Three professional athletes and several accomplished athletes and coaches highlight an impressive group of 12 who will be inducted into the 13th Class of the East Suburban Catholic Conference Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 12 at Abbington Banquet Hall in Glen Ellyn.
The class is headlined by a pair of NFL standout tight ends, including Carmel Catholic’s Sean McGrath and Joliet Catholic’s Coby Fleener. McGrath currently plays for the Los Angeles Chargers, and the former athlete at Eastern Illinois and Henderson State (Ark.) has also had NFL stints with Seattle and Kansas City. A former Indianapolis Colt, Fleener has scored 22 NFL touchdowns and currently plays for the New Orleans Saints.
Meanwhile, inductee and the No. 3 all-time leading women’s basketball scorer at DePaul- Joliet Catholic’s Allie Quigley- has played in the WNBA since 2008 and currently hails with the Chicago Sky.
The evening will also feature the first awarding of the Dave Mattio ESCC Man of the Year Award to JCA’s Dan Sharp. The 21-year Athletic Director at JCA also won six IHSA state football titles as head coach and was a dear friend of the late Marian Catholic AD Mattio for decades.
Great athletes are not produced without great leadership, including a pair of coach inductees. Michael Jankowski has coached cross country, football and track at Notre Dame for 26 years, including head coach stints in cross country and track. Carmel’s Robert Kuykendall has mentored wrestling athletes for 36 years, including a head coach capacity since 2008.
The impressive induction list also includes seven more athletes who moved on to make their mark at the next level, including: Benet Academy softball standout Lauren Rohan (four-time all-ESCC, Grand Valley State), Benet tennis star Connor Roth (University of Illinois, two-time Academic All-Big 10), Marian Catholic football standout Josh Mattio (14-0 in ESCC as QB, University of St. Francis) and Marist cross country/track star Lauren Haberkorn (IHSA state cross country champ; Butler University).
Also, Nazareth three-sport athlete Julie Schiffler (Roadrunner all-time basketball leading scorer, University of St. Francis), Saint Patrick golfer Joseph Cermak (three-time top-5 at IHSA State, Iowa State) and Saint Viator golf standout Joseph Carlson (three-time IHSA team state champ, Villanova and San Diego State).
Ticket reservations ($50) for the 7 p.m. dinner (6 p.m. reception) on April 12 may be made through any of the ESCC school athletic departments and more information and history are also available on the ESCC web site at www.eastsuburbancc.com.
The 2008 Saint Viator men’s golf IHSA State Champions will be recognized as well. The 13th ESCC Hall of Fame class brings the number of current inductees to 138, representing nine of the current 10 member schools and former members Fenwick, Holy Cross, Providence Catholic and Saint Joseph.
More information about the ESCC Hall of Fame or induction dinner may be obtained by contacting Chair Mike Hennessey, Notre Dame College Prep Athletic Director, at 847-779-8652.
