ESCC Hall of Fame to induct 12 on March 11

Highlighted by six-time IHSA football state champion coach Dan Sharp at Joliet Catholic Academy and the second winningest girls volleyball coach in IHSA history Nan Airola of Providence Catholic, the East Suburban Catholic Conference will induct its fifth Hall of Fame class on Thursday, March 11 at the Crystal Sky Banquet Hall in McCook, Ill.

Also Joliet Catholic’s athletic director, Sharp has guided the Hilltoppers to a 141-26 record in 13 seasons, including three perfect 14-0 marks. He has led JCA to the IHSA playoffs in 12 consecutive seasons. Airola is one of only three IHSA volleyball coaches to eclipse 900 career victories, and has led the Celtics to three IHSA Elite Eight appearances.

The induction class of 12 also includes current Marist High School Principal Larry Tucker, Notre Dame football coach and Athletic Director Mike Hennessey and former Benet softball standout and current Benedictine University head coach Kate Enoch Keller, along with others who have represented the ESCC with class and innovation in coaching, administration and the athletic arena.

Tickets reservations ($50) for the 7 p.m. dinner on March 11 may be made through any of the ESCC school athletic departments and more information and history is also available on the ESCC web site at www.eastsuburbancc.com.

The current Hall of Fame class also includes former standout athletes in Marian Catholic’s Jerry Verde (football, current head coach at Crete-Monee High School), St. Joseph’s Jeff Berndt (soccer) and St. Viator’s John Josten (football) and Scott Zetek (football, wrestling). Other coaches elected to the Hall of Fame include Marian Catholic’s Kevin Kelly (basketball, softball, also the ESCC webmaster), Notre Dame’s Bob Beckman (golf) and St. Patrick’s Patrick Duggan (wrestling).

The 1990 and 2000 Joliet Catholic football state championship teams and Benet Academy 2000 soccer state champions will be recognized at the March 11 event as well. The fifth ESCC Hall of Fame class brings the number of current inductees to 62, representing 11 of the current 13 member schools and former member Holy Cross.

More information about the ESCC Hall of Fame or induction dinner may be obtained by contacting Chair Mike Hennessey, Notre Dame High School Athletic Director, at 847-779-8652.
